Guide to choosing compression clothing for sporty kids

Compression gear, like compression tops, football skins, and base layers, can be a game-changer for our young athletes. Whether it’s keeping muscles warm on chilly match days, aiding muscle recovery after training, or improving comfort during high-intensity play, the right compression clothing can make a noticeable difference. Here’s what parents of young football and rugby players need to know when choosing the best compression gear for their child.

Prioritise fit and comfort

Compression clothing should be snug yet comfortable. The aim is for it to feel like a second skin, providing essential support without restricting movement. When fitting a compression top or football skin, look for a fit that won’t slide out of place or distract your child during play. Though it may be tempting to buy a size up for growing kids, this is one garment that truly benefits from a close, accurate fit to ensure full support and performance.

Also, look for details like tags or seams that could irritate your child’s skin. Many brands offer tagless designs or have flat seams to prevent any rubbing or discomfort that might disrupt your young athlete’s focus on the game.

Choose breathable, moisture-wicking fabrics

Football and rugby are intense sports, and young athletes can work up quite a sweat! Look for moisture-wicking materials, such as polyester or nylon blends, which pull moisture away from the skin to help keep kids cool and dry. Breathable fabrics also prevent overheating during play and allow for better temperature regulation, so your child can stay focused on their game. For colder weather, consider adding a thermal base layer to maintain warmth without adding unnecessary bulk.

Understand base layer vs. compression layer

It’s easy to confuse base layers and compression layers, but both serve important functions:

   - Base Layers: These are designed for temperature regulation and are ideal for layering in cooler weather.

   - Compression Layers: These apply gentle pressure to the muscles, helping reduce muscle fatigue and encouraging faster recovery after a match or training session.

For kids who play multiple sports or face varying weather conditions, a versatile base layer or compression layer can be a very useful addition.

Consider sport-specific needs

Football and rugby can be demanding on young athletes, and there are a few specific features to look for:

   - Football skins: Look for skins that offer extra padding around the knees or elbows. This additional protection can reduce the impact on joints, which is especially helpful in a sport like football with frequent falls and tackles.

- Compression tops for rugby: When choosing a compression top for rugby, look for one that’s durable, comfortable and made from moisture-wicking material. Although a size-down approach is recommended for most adults, it’s important not to restrict their movement so choose a size that feels comfortable for during sport and post match / training recovery.

- Compression shorts for rugby: A quality pair of compression shorts helps support muscles, reduce fatigue, prevent chafing and aid recovery - making them an ideal kit purchase for young players who need comfort, stability and quick recovery during intense play.

- Layering options: For both football and rugby, layering is key to staying comfortable in changing weather. Choose items that work well for both warm and cold days, allowing your child to stay comfortable whatever the conditions.

Durability is key

Kids put clothing through plenty of wear and tear, and sports gear is no exception! Look for durable compression clothing that can handle regular washing and high-energy play without losing its elasticity. High-quality compression gear will maintain its shape and support, even after countless training sessions and matches.

Do children really need compression gear?

The answer is a big yes! Compression wear isn’t just for adult athletes—children also benefit from improved circulation, reduced muscle fatigue, and faster recovery times. For sports like football, rugby, and athletics, compression tops, football skins, and base layers offer essential support for every match and training session.
