In our fast-paced, always-connected world, it's easy for both adults and children to become ensnared by the constant lure of mobile devices. As parents, we often worry about the impact of excessive screen time on our children's well-being. We asked experts and fellow parents for their ten device-related self-care activities to help your children break free from the clutches of screen addiction.
Understanding the impact of mobile phone addiction
In an era where digital connectivity is ubiquitous, the impact of constant device use on psychological well-being is undeniable. Unfortunately, our children, being less emotionally mature, may struggle to self-manage their screen time addiction. To address this, we've compiled practical tips to promote a healthier relationship with technology.
- Bedtime boundaries: Banish phones from bedrooms at least two hours before bedtime. Create a tech-free sanctuary to foster a peaceful night's sleep and discourage late-night scrolling.
- Capture moments mindfully: When on days out, if your kids want to use their phones for photos, encourage them to switch to airplane mode. This ensures they capture memories without succumbing to the constant lure of notifications.
- Morning routine sans screens: Establish a morning routine that excludes phones. Prioritise dressing, breakfast, and teeth-cleaning before diving into the digital world. It sets a positive tone for the day.
- App organisation: If your children are old enough to use certain apps, assist them in organizing these apps into folders away from the home screen. This minimises visual distractions and encourages intentional app usage.
- Family phone-free hour: Dedicate a specific hour each day to a family-wide phone detox. Power down together and engage in activities that promote quality time and connection.
- Social media break: Consider taking a collective social media break as a family. Explain the potential negative impact of social media on mental health and enjoy the benefits of a temporary digital detox.
- Social media education: Educate your kids about social media. Share the surprising fact that even the creators of these platforms restrict their own children from using them. Help your kids understand the addictive nature of these apps. If you have Netflix, grab some popcorn and watch “The Social Dilemma” with your children for a really thought provoking watch.
- Set strict home rules: Establish clear rules around device use at home. This may include no phones during dinner, in bedrooms, or even in the bathroom. Create a family agreement to ensure everyone is on the same page.
- Promote offline connections: Encourage your kids to engage in activities that don't involve technology. We know that many of our followers are young athletes but for those who are not then join clubs, attend classes, or participate in sports that foster real-world connections and help them reset their screen-centric mindset.
- Open communication: Foster open communication with your children. Discuss how their phone usage makes them feel and be vigilant for signs of behavioural changes that could indicate issues like bullying. Encourage them to express their thoughts and feelings in a journal.
